📉 Spanberger tanking in final weeks

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Less than an hour ago The Cook Political Report changed it's rating in VA-07 from Lean-Democrat to Toss-up.

WHY IT MATTERS: The race in VA-07 is the most expensive House race in the nation. Despite having the upper hand in spending, Spanberger's message isn't resonating with voters.

💰By the Numbers:

  • Over $28 million has been spent in the VA-07 general election

  • Anti-Vega ad spending stands at almost $13 million

⏰ The Timing: The race rating change comes just a week after Spanberger melted down, pulling out of a scheduled televised debate. Spanberger's campaign has largely gone dark in the closing weeks of the race, with few public appearances by the embattled Congresswoman.

In contrast, momentum is swelling around Republican challenger Yesli Vega. The last week and a half have seen large events for Vega across VA-07 almost daily, including rallies featuring Governor Glenn Youngkin, Senator Ted Cruz, Sheriffs from across her district, and former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

The Bottom Line: Vega's strong position and momentum (despite being hit with almost $13M in ads against her) are made very clear in the updated rating for the race. Spanberger's engine is stalling out in the last lap of this race.
